Rangers have been strongly linked with a summer loan move for Sevilla midfielder Joan Jordan.
The imposing 6ft experienced campaigner, 30, would bring grit and physicality to the Rangers midfield but also technical quality after years plying his trade in La Liga.
Whilst the proposed Rangers loan move for Jordan is anything but complete, discussions are believed to be ongoing.
Joan Jordan isn’t the only midfielder being linked to Rangers this week either.
BSC Young Boys star Chiekh Niasse has also been mentioned alongside the Gers as the club look to bolster their options in the middle of the park.
With Nicolas Raskin leaving the Netherlands with his foot in a protective boot, it’s fair to say we need reinforcements.
But amid the excitement of all the transfer chatter surrounding the likes of Jordan and Niasse, the reports appear to signal the end of one pursuit as the Ibrox purse strings are tightened.
McLean to Rangers goes cold
The reports surrounding bluenose Norwich City midfielder Kenny McLean threaten to be the biggest ‘will he won’t he’ saga of the transfer window.
Rangers were said to hold an interest in McLean earlier in the summer, only for the links to reportedly fall apart over the length of contract on the table.
McLean’s agent then almost fell off his chair with laughter.
Since the tone around the transfer changed to it potentially being back on, there’s been radio silence as the nerves of Rangers supporters become frayed heading into the new season.
But the high-profile interest in Joan Jordan threatens to put a pin in the Kenny McLean transfer links once and for all.
Both players occupy similar roles in the side and won’t be moving to Ibrox to warm the bench.
With Rangers manager Philippe Clement waxing lyrical about Mohamed Diomande this week, it’s clear the Ivorian will also play a big role in the middle of the park this season.
That injury to Raskin might change things – heck Rangers could probably do with another two experienced midfielders in any case – but you’ll forgive fans for joining the Jordan and McLean dots.
Throw in the links to Niasse, and the signing of Connor Barron, and the club’s options suddenly evolve.
Clement insists transfers are in pipeline
The situation with transfers at Rangers came further under the microscope at the weekend.
After Philippe Clement admitted the club will have to sell before they can buy, it left the Ibrox support nervous over the substantial work which is still be done.
But speaking to RTV amid the furore, the Rangers boss quelled those fears by claiming that it’s the market, and not the club, which has slowed business down.
In comments which potentially shine some light on the Kenny McLean situation, the Rangers manager claims that such is the nature of the window, some deals won’t be concluded until after the season starts.
“We are not where we want to be at the end of August but I don’t think we are the only team in the world,” said Clement. “I know supporters want that but it’s not possible.
“Everyone is working hard on that. How fast those things go, you never have control of that because it has to do with yourself, what you can spend, it has to do with other teams, if they want to let players go and how much they ask for that.
“And it’s about convincing players also. So there are several players that are convinced Rangers is a good place but you still need negotiations around that.”
