Jonny Evans to Rangers earns swift Philippe Clement rebuttal for one clear reason

Philippe Clement admitted that Patrick Stewart would be addressing Rangers supporters directly when it comes to the January transfer window.

But something tells us the Rangers manager wouldn’t have been expecting the club’s new CEO to provide a dossier on would-be targets this winter.

It’s clear Rangers are in a tight spot financially and Philippe Clement pointed to Patrick Stewart when grilled on the club’s desperate need for a new centre-back.

And as Rangers fans await the word of the ex-Manchester United chief, it’s been claimed the name of an Old Trafford stalwart has been doing the rounds at Auchenhowie.

Manchester United legend Jonny Evans

Jonny Evans is one of the great British centre-backs of the modern era and the Northern Irish legend remains a Premier League stalwart.

Having spent an initial nine years at Manchester United, Evans made almost 200 appearances for the Red Devils and won eight major honours, including three Premier League titles and the Champions League in 2008.

The 107-times capped Northern Ireland legend might be 37-years-old but Evans has experience that money quite simply cannot buy in the modern era.

Now back at Old Trafford after stints with West Brom and Leicester City down south – where he played in eight back-to-back Premier League campaigns – Jonny Evans MBE doesn’t quite have the same role at the famous old club which he used to.

But Evans has contributed at times this season, even if he now finds himself largely out of the picture under Ruben Amorim.

Philippe Clement ‘put off’ Jonny Evans to Rangers

This isn’t the first time Rangers have been mentioned alongside Jonny Evans this January transfer window either.

Rangers legend Kris Boyd tipped the club to look at the ‘fantastic’ Evans as injury chaos envelops the Ibrox backline.

And it’s with that in mind that we come to you again today amid claims in the Daily Record that Jonny Evans has been mentioned to Philippe Clement by a member of the Rangers board.

Whilst some of you might join the dots and point to Patrick Stewart given the CEO’s time at Old Trafford, it’s important to stress no board member is mentioned in the report.

And whilst Jonny Evans might sound like a good signing on paper, the Record are led to believe Philippe Clement is apparently somewhat against the idea.

Why?

Because Nigerian international defender Leon Balogun, a veteran himself at 36, is the club’s wise old defensive head with the Belgian hoping to work with someone a little bit younger.
