Rangers remain “very interested” in signing Dutch midfielder Joey Veerman as the playmaker reportedly goes to war with Heerenveen over his asking price.

The Eredivisie star, 22, was first mentioned alongside Rangers at the beginning of the transfer window [Scottish Sun].

However, with the likes of PSV, Ajax and Atalanta also mentioned Rangers were set to face some stiff competition for his signature.

But after PSV moved elsewhere, Veerman opened the door for a Rangers move before manager Johnny Jansen warned clubs might be put off by the £9m asking price [Daily Record].

Now, SM Media are claiming that the Gers remain “very interested” in signing the midfielder who is eager to play in the Champions League.

They are claiming that a fee of between £6m-£8m is “being discussed” but reiterates that the deal “isn’t anywhere close to happening” with there being a “long way to go”.

This comes after quotes appeared from Veerman himself seemingly railing against the Dutch club rejecting a €5m (£4.3m) offer for the player from Serie A side Verona.

The player is also clear that he wants to play elsewhere next season.

“I think the Italians have made a very reasonable offer, but when I hear what Heerenveen is asking, it can sometimes be a very different story,” said Veerman [VI].

“Ten to twelve million? I think that’s crazy. After a corona year with empty stadiums, the money is pretty much gone everywhere.

“I honestly don’t think this makes any sense.

“But then they (the club) say ‘you still have a contract for three years. If it doesn’t work out this year, we’re going to enjoy you for another year and ask again next season.’

“I’m very sorry about that, because I’m ready for something else.

‘I’m having a good time in Heerenveen and I’m playing football well, but I’m just ready for a new challenge.

“The plan was to find it this summer, but I wonder if it will ever happen. I’m disappointed about that.

“There are several interested clubs that I am very positive about and Verona is one of them.”
