Rangers-linked Joey Veerman has conceded that he might be remaining at Heerenveen beyond this window as reports of a £3.8m from AZ Alkmaar.

The Dutch playmaker has probably been the most high-profile Rangers-linked player of the window with the Glasgow Times reporting apparent £7m interest earlier in the campaign.

But following the Champions League capitulation – and the signing of Juninho Bacuna – any talk surrounding Rangers has certainly cooled.

There has been much talk of bids being lodged by Serie A side Verona and Eredivisie rivals Feyenoord alongside AZ but there’s some conjecture regarding any official Rangers interest.

But speaking after Heerenveen’s 3-1 defeat to Alkmaar at the weekend, Veerman conceded that Heerenveen pay his wages and that he may well be remaining in Holland for the time being.

“I am simply paid by Heerenveen. I am also a player of this club,” said Veerman [Leeuwarder Courant].

“It now takes another day and a half for the transfer window to open, so it will be quite difficult to leave.

“I already knew about AZ’s offer two days earlier. It’s just before the transfer period, but I can’t change that.”

These comments are from a few days ago but more recently Heerenveen sporting director Ferry de Haan was discussing the player’s future on Omrop Fryslan.

That appears to confirms the €4.5m Alkmaar interest with it long being held in the media that Heerenveen were holding out for €10m for the player.

“AZ has been clear. And so have we. The chances of that continuing are not real at the moment,” said de Haan.

“The closer you get to closing the market, the less easy it will be. Getting a replacement is becoming increasingly difficult, so you as a club are forced into a problematic situation.

“It is not the case that every player will have to wait five to twelve until Tuesday until Heerenveen makes contact once.”

That suggests that despite the long summer of transfer links to Rangers and elsewhere, Joey Veerman will be a Heerenveen player when the window shuts.

Whilst a move for Veerman may not be a goer, according to one journalist, interest remains in three key first team players as the Gers head into the final hours of the window.
