Rangers loanee Jermain Defoe has previewed the Scottish League Cup final, as quoted by the Daily Mail.

The 37-year-old, who is currently on loan from Bournemouth, scored against East Fife in the Gers’ first game of the competition and came off the bench in the semi-final win over Hearts last weekend.

Now, he’s targeting the trophy, claiming that the lure of potential silverware saw him turn down interest from multiple clubs in England in order to move to Ibrox.

‘That’s what I came here for, to be honest,’ said Defoe, as quoted by the Daily Mail. ‘I had other options in England but when I got the call from the club I thought, do you know what? The opportunity to come to a club of this size at the back end of my career and try to win some silverware – for me it was an easy decision.”

‘A game against Celtic at Hampden? It doesn’t get any bigger than that. The stadium is going to be electric.

‘If we win it would be up there with anything I have achieved. Of course it would.’

Verdict

Despite playing second fiddle to Alfredo Morelos in terms of game time, Defoe has been deadly in front of goal this season making him popular with the fans and he clearly has no regrets about opting to come to Rangers.

He has 13 goals from 762 minutes of playing time in all competitions [Transfermarkt], which is an outstanding record.

The veteran represented some big clubs south of the border, such as West Ham and Tottenham, as well as earning 57 caps for a star-studded England team, so it’s remarkable to think that he’s only won one major piece of silverware in his career.

That triumph came in the 2007/08 English League Cup with Spurs, but the forward didn’t even feature in the final.

It’s no wonder, then, that he’s already so pumped up for the Hampden showpiece. He’s scored plenty of goals in his time, but next month, maybe he’ll add a cup final winner to his collection.
