Jermain Defoe could be the short-term fix Rangers are looking for

Veteran poacher, Jermain Defoe, could be the perfect short-term fix for Rangers this month. That is, if he would consider a substantial wage cut.
The 57-cap England front man ticks a lot of boxes, apart from his current pay packet of £65,000-a-week.

He is a proven goal scorer. An out-and-out finisher with 162 Premier League goals across a long club career.
That’s something he offers, that the likes of Dominic Solanke do not.

What’s more, he is a vastly experienced player. The kind of voice Gerrard would surely love to have around the dressing room during a vital second half of the season.
He’s currently valued at £1.8 million by Tranfermarkt and contracted until June 2020.

However, given
Sky Sports’ report that he is surplus to requirements, he would likely go for substantially less.
At 36, Defoe is certainly not a long-term prospect. Yet, that’s actually preferable, as the Gers already have those waiting in the wings.
Hardie, Dallas and Rudden to name a few.
What they really need, is someone who can immediately ease the pressure on Morelos and provide a boost to a relatively inexperienced dressing room.

Wages a major stumbling block

However, it’s clear that Rangers would not be able to afford his current salary, even in the short-term.
He would need to make a personal sacrifice similar to that which Steven Davis is reportedly set to.
Perhaps the prospect of a first career league title and the draw of working with former England teammate, Steven Gerrard, could convince Defoe, that Ibrox is his best option this month.
