Jack Butland would signal strong start to Rangers summer evolution

Call it an overhaul, call it an evolution, but Rangers’ summer transfer business is reportedly set to kick off in style with a move for Crystal Palace goalkeeper Jack Butland.

Currently on loan at Man Utd, the England international might not have been seen in Three Lions colours since earning his 9th cap in 2018, but he brings a sense of pedigree to the number one position we’ve been sorely lacking this season.

Reports are suggesting that, after some flip flopping in the media, Jack Butland is closing in on a move to Rangers after all and will join up with the club at the end of his loan stint with Man Utd.

The fact he’s at Old Trafford speaks volumes about the goalkeeper’s ability but a lack of Premier League appearances over the last few seasons may well have forced Jack Butland to look towards Rangers as his contract ticks down at Selhurst Park.

Jack Butland would be a solid Rangers signing

The Gers can offer players so much of course; the chance for silverware, a loyal if not vociferous support, and the opportunity to play Champions League football. Should we get there.

But as the club limps to this summer rebuild, or whatever we’re going to call it, finally putting an end to the conversation around the number one is a strong footing to begin the process.

Rangers fans have been highly critical of the club’s approach to the number one position all season long, with Jon McLaughlin flapping when given the chance and Father Time catching up with Allan McGregor.

Robby McCrorie – sidelined with injury for most of the campaign – also looks to have missed his shot of making the gloves his own.

Substantial investment in the goalkeeper position is a big priority this summer and if Rangers can settle the discussion with the signing of Jack Butland it will help shift the focus to other parts of the squad.

At 30-years-old, there is still plenty of juice left in Jack Butland who’ll be coming to Rangers with a point to prove and the opportunity to finally secure a number one jersey of his own.
