As reports continue to gather around Jack Butland, somewhere in the excitement of the potential deal will be lost the clear hint that it drops regarding Rangers legend Allan McGregor.

The Ibrox support have, largely, given a thumbs up to snowballing reports that Jack Butland will join Rangers in the summer when his contract expires at Crystal Palace.

Still only 30-years-old, Jack Butland is currently on loan at Man Utd and is a former England international with a point to prove should the move to Rangers be signed, sealed and delivered.

The transfer would also, unequivocally, settle the Rangers number 1 debate with the Premier League stopper reportedly set to take the jersey next season.

Any Butland deal also represents a strong start to a big window for Rangers, who have sizeable holes in the squad to plug and who will need to deal with a substantial turnover as contracts expire.

Jack Butland Rangers reports signal end for Allan McGregor

One of those contracts is that of Allan McGregor, who is currently in the middle of a raging debate regarding the position as the club’s domestic downturn rattles the support.

Rangers have surrendered their brief domestic dominance to Celtic and the goalkeeper position, bottled by Jon McLaughlin earlier in the season, is firmly in the crosshairs.

Allan McGregor has been a club legend but last season the most visible signs yet that he had entered his twilight were staved off by a new contract, much to the groans of the fans.

That has continued into this campaign where, although not quite as disastrous as the last, Allan McGregor has been unconvincing in his once unshakeable shot stopping and completely nonexistent in dealing with corners and crosses into the box.

Rangers need a commanding type to come in and breathe confidence into the position and Jack Butland certainly represents that in the eyes of many.

But with the signing, it surely ushers Allan McGregor out of the door at Rangers and signals the end of an era for, arguably, the club’s greatest ever goalkeeper.
