TalkSPORT presenter Alex Crook has dropped an apparent Rangers transfer blow, by claiming that Ibrox-linked Sam Johnstone ‘knows’ he needs to move to the Premier League.
The Gers were credited with interest in current West Brom no.1 Johnstone by TEAMtalk last week.
It was asserted that the champions of Scotland are one of a host of clubs keen on snapping him up on a pre-contract deal, with senior Ibrox keepers Allan McGregor and Jon McLaughlin both set to be out of contract in the summer.
Tottenham, Newcastle and West Ham were the other clubs mentioned in the report.
Crook gives Sam Johnstone update
It always seemed unlikely that Johnstone would move to Scotland if there was genuine Premier League interest, as it could negatively impact his chances of staying in the England setup.
And now, Crook has asserted that the 28-year-old is specifically eyeing a move to the English top flight.
“Sam Johnstone very much wants to be part of England’s World Cup plans – I think he knows to achieve that he has to be back in the Premier League sooner rather than later,” he said on Thursday [talkSPORT].
“I’m hearing Tottenham are joining the likes of Newcastle, Southampton and West Ham in showing a definite interest in Johnstone.”
Possible transfer blow for Rangers
This is a blow for Rangers’ transfer plans, if the initial report is to be believed.
However, it did seem a long shot in the first place and there are plenty of quality, more attainable keepers out there.
Furthermore, while McGregor is likely to retire at the end of the season, McLaughlin could yet be awarded a new deal and there’s plenty of young talent in this area at Auchenhowie.
Robby McCrorie has already shown what he can do at first-team level, while Kieran Wright is still on the books and B-team no.1 Jay Hogarth has trained with the senior group at times this season.
