Gonçalo Borges is one of the latest names being linked with a move to Rangers.

The 23-year-old FC Porto winger is the latest attacking name being mentioned alongside the Ibrox side as Philippe Clement looks to strengthen his squad.

But with the Scottish Premiership’s big kick-off and Champions League qualifiers on the horizon, reports that Rangers had their opening Borges bid thrown out has raised nerves amongst fans.

Now, Fabrizio Romano has chimed in as reports in France claim that Gonçalo Borges IS closing in on an €8m (£6.7m) exit from the Portuguese side.

But will the Porto winger be heading to Ibrox?

Borges ‘close’ to Porto exit

Portuguese publication Record claim that Rangers had a €6m (£5m) offer for Gonçalo Borges turned down by Porto over the weekend.

But the report also suggests that Ligue 1 club Strasbourg are interested in a move for the winger, who played 28 times for Porto last season without scoring a single goal.

And it’s the French side who have now nicked in front of Rangers when it comes to a move for Borges with the attacker set to be the latest public pursuit which has fallen short at Ibrox.

The collapse of the Joan Jordan transfer deal was the fourth high profile pursuit which has ended in failure this summer and Borges is now likely to be the fifth.

According to L’Equipe in France, Strasbourg have struck an initial €8m (£6.7m) deal to bring Gonçalo Borges to Ligue 1 next season.

The report states that an agreement is ‘close to being reached’ with the initial £6.7m fee excluding any additional add-ons.

Transfer guru Fabrizio Romano has also chimed in on X, dropping a hint that a switch to Strasbourg is close.

Rangers transfer hunt continues

If the reports of Rangers’ interest were legitimate, and Gonçalo Borges heads to Strasbourg, then it will be yet another failure to land a target in this transfer window.

The Rangers recruitment team are under intense scrutiny with many viewing the club’s squad as actually going backwards from last season.

In the final third there is a sizeable drop off in quality with the loss of Abdallah Sima in particular a major blow to Philippe Clement.

Rangers retain an interest in Sima but for the time being a deal is not expected to be financially viable for the Ibrox side.

As a result there have been extensive links to wide players with Rangers already completing a deal to bring Czech international Vaclav Cerny to the club from Wolfsburg.

Rangers also retain an interest in Plymouth winger Morgan Whittaker although it remains unclear if the interest in Gonçalo Borges has ended the pursuit of either player.
