Reported summer Rangers target Tasos Douvikas shows his class by scoring against Barcelona following a summer move to Celta Vigo.

At one stage of the summer transfer window, it genuinely looked like Tasos Douvikas might be Rangers’ main striker target of the summer.

On the hunt for new forward options, the now 24-year-old was off the back of a 22-goal season at Eredivisie side Utrecht and reports had mooted the Greek international as a legitimate option.

There were even reports at the time that Rangers were on the verge of launching a £7m bid for Tasos Douvikas in what would’ve been a major statement of intent.

As things would transpire, Rangers would move to bring Cyriel Dessers in from Cremonese and Danilo from Feyenoord, transfers which allowed this particular link to evaporate into obscurity.

Tasos Douvikas would then move to Celta Vigo – who paid a reported £10m for his services – and now the Greek is officially off the mark with the Spanish club after scoring against Barcelona.

Rangers-linked Tasos Douvikas scores v Barcelona

In an enthralling encounter at the Nou Camp, Celta Vigo striker Jorgen Strand Larsen scored after only 19 minutes of the game.

With both sides having chances heading into the second half, Tasos Douvikas came on for the Danish goalscorer after 66 minutes and Barcelona soon found out about the Greek.

Ten minutes later the striker doubled Celta Vigo’s lead by getting off the mark for the club and in that moment began to repay the substantial investment the La Liga side made for his services.

Douvikas showed his striking prowess to roll the ball past Andre Ter Stegen after meeting a well-timed through ball from Iago Aspas in a goal which should’ve really won the game.

But in true Barcelona style the club rallied in the final 15 minutes of the match to produce a quite marvellous comeback.

In the space of four minutes, Robert Lewandowski’s double had equalised for Xavi’s side before three minutes later Joao Cancelo’s late run into the box found a cross and won the game.

Rangers fans will have one eye on the progress of Tasos Douvikas given those Ibrox links but despite getting off the mark for Celta Vigo, his team falls to defeat against a resilient Barcelona team.
