Steven Gerrard has provided a Rangers transfer update on the eve of the club’s Premiership opener against Aberdeen, as captured by RangersTV.

The Gers kick-off their 2020/21 campaign at Pittodrie on Saturday afternoon but that didn’t stop transfer talk dominating the Friday morning press conference.

The future of Alfredo Morelos was, as always, a hot topic but the Gers boss was also asked to provide an update on where the club is at regarding any potential new signings.

He didn’t name any names but his responses will excite supporters.

“I think it is going to be a unique window in terms of ins and outs,” said Gerrard, as captured by RangersTV. “Obviously some teams have only just finished, some leagues are still playing, some players are on holiday. So, I think it’s going to have to be a patient window.”

“We are close on one or two things in terms of additions. So, fingers crossed if they keep progressing we’re hoping to have someone in the door pretty soon.

“Until you finalise it and get it over the line I don’t want to say too much on it, but we are actively trying to make the team and the squad stronger and we are close on a couple of things.”

Later in the press conference, the manager hinted there could be a new arrival before next week.

“I wouldn’t be surprised if there’s a new Rangers player in the coming days,” he added.

The Gers have already been relatively busy this summer, swooping for Jon McLaughlin, Calvin Bassey and Leon Balogun, as well as making Ianis Hagi’s loan deal permanent.

There is more than enough quality in the squad to go to Aberdeen and get a result on Saturday afternoon, but more strengthening in midfield and attacking areas will be required if a sustained title challenge is to be mounted over the course of the season.

This latest update suggests that both Gerrard and the board recognise that.
