As quoted by the Glasgow Evening Times, Steven Gerrard has issued big praise for Borna Barisic, in the wake of Rangers’ 1-0 win at St Mirren.

The Gers manager handed the 26-year-old a surprise start at left-back, with Andy Halliday and Jon Flanagan starting the previous fixtures against East Fife and Legia Warsaw, respectively.

It was a brave call, considering the criticism Barisic has faced across the back end of last season and the first throes of this.

Yet, Gerrard’s faith was repaid and he can now see the Croatian international kicking on.

“There are big moments, like changes to players’ form or where they are at,” said Gerrard, as quoted by the Glasgow Evening Times. “I’ve seen that many times.”

“I think it’s all down to Borna. I see the quality and I see the attributes. He is six foot, in good shape, he has quality, he can run. There is nothing stopping Borna in my opinion and if he can find the level he had today I will be a happy man.”

Gerrard comments’ suggest Rangers full-back going nowhere

Given Barisic’s struggles over his first season at Ibrox, it was widely suggested that he could leave the club this summer.

French outlet Soccerlink reported last month, that the left-back was a target for Ligue 1 outfit, Dijon.

Yet, based on these comments from his manager, he’s heading nowhere in the final week of the window.

Gerrard is looking down the line and asking for consistency from the full-back. He talks of the raw attributes that could eventually see him make a success of his time in Glasgow.

Judging by the player’s own reaction to scoring on Sunday, too, it looks likes he’s here to stay.

The manager has stuck by his man through some tough times and now it’s time for Barisic, who is contracted until 2022 [Transfermarkt], to repay him in full.
