Tuttomercatoweb claims that Martin Skrtel has left Atalanta, in a bizarre transfer u-turn.

The ex-Liverpool defender signed for the Black and Blue’s earlier this month, after a summer of speculation over his future.

He had been a free agent after leaving Fenerbahce and was consistently linked with a move to Rangers to link up with his former teammate, Steven Gerrard.

Turkish outlets Fanatik and Milliyet claimed that he was on the verge of joining the Gers in early August, despite the club having already recruited two centre-backs in Filip Helander and George Edmundson.

Yet, in the end, the Slovakian chose Champions League newbies, Atalanta.

According to Tuttomercatoweb, Skrtel is on the move again already, though. It’s stated that his contract has been terminated by mutual consent after a row with the head coach, Gian Piero Gasperini.

It’s a remarkable development considering the veteran had yet to even make his debut.

Now, instead of Champions League fixtures against Man City, Shakhtar and Dinamo Zagreb, Skrtel once again finds himself searching for a new club.

Had Rangers been genuinely close to a deal before his Serie A switch, this shock twist may have swung the door open once more for an Ibrox move.

Yet, surely there’s no need to go for Skrtel given the current form of Nikola Katic and Connor Goldson. The Gers have an in-form pairing, with Helander and Edmundson providing plenty of cover.

He may be a free agent once more, but he isn’t required at Ibrox.
