File Josh Doig Rangers links under hot baloney amid talk of Verona compromise

Rangers have been linked with a January move for Verona left-back Josh Doig but if the kind of money being talked about is true then we reckon it’s all hot baloney.

We suspect the opportunity to sign the young Scotland left-back, 21, might well have gone the moment the ex-Hibs star signed a £3m deal in Serie A.

This week, Rangers were mentioned as potential Josh Doig suitors as left-back rumours continue to swirl around the Ibrox squad.

Borna Barisic is out of contract, there are questions over Ridvan Yilmaz, and suddenly four names had popped up doing the rounds in the press.

But of the quartet of left-backs linked to Rangers, Josh Doig is the one we reckon whose most out of the club’s reach as Philippe Clement looks to strengthen his squad this January.

Whilst we respect baloney, or Bologna sausage, is an Italian-American delicacy based on Mortadella, you’ll forgive us for using it here for effect.

The truth is that if Verona really do want €6m (£5.2m) then, no matter what way you slice it, baloney is a very apt term for the suggestion Rangers might complete a deal.

The latest from Tuttosport suggests that Verona might be willing to reach a compromise over the defender but unless that’s trading Serie A linked Ridvan Yilmaz, we reckon this one’s a non-starter.

Not least because it appears Torino are the side at the forefront of the hunt.

Whilst Josh Doig is certainly a talented homegrown option, the finances involved just make no sense for a Rangers side and management who’re working on a tight budget this January.

Boasting a Croatian and Turkish international in the position until at least the summer, one suspects there are more important areas to spread the Ibrox club’s limited resources this window.

Rangers transfer attentions needed elsewhere

Namely, Rangers need greater reinforcements in the offensive part of the park.

Fabio Silva took a wage cut to join the Gers from Wolves – earning him immediate staunch points – but the club can’t be done there.

An out-and-out number nine has to be top of the agenda whilst those links to Million Manhoef continue to have the nerves jangling amongst the support.

But what is utterly confusing is that there are some who would sooner endorse an indulgent £5m+ move for a left-back in a tight window than spend £4m on proven goalscorer Lawrence Shankland.

The latest suggests that we’ve been priced out of the hunt for the Hearts hitman and if that is actually true, then we’re being polite in comparing expensive links to Verona star Josh Doig to American sandwich meat.
