Dundee United manager Robbie Neilson has provided an update concerning the future of Rangers linked goal machine Lawrence Shankland, as quoted by BBC Sport.
The 24-year-old is tearing it up in the Scottish second tier once again this season, scoring 19 goals in 18 appearances since joining the Tangerines from Ayr United in the summer.

His exploits at club level have brought him international recognition and he got off the mark in Scotland colours against San Marino last month.
Following on from the persistent rumours of last season, the Daily Record reported that both Rangers and Celtic have scouted the striker in recent times. Given that Shankland grew up a Gers fan, there’s a thought that Steven Gerrard would hold a distinct advantage should he decide to swoop.
However, it appears that any transfer won’t be taking place during the winter window.
“I don’t think there will be any bids getting entertained in January, that is for sure,” said United manager Neilson, as quoted by BBC Sport. “The owner [Mark Ogren] was over last month and spoke about the importance of keeping Lawrence and making sure that we get ourselves out of this league.”
“Every player has his price but the value of going up would heavily outweigh that, not just financially but also the prestige and with the fans. I expect him to be here at the start of February.”

Verdict
It’s hardly surprising to see United take this approach with Shankland.
He’s far and away the club’s biggest asset and is a vital cog in their push for promotion. They’ve tried and failed to get out of the Championship for several seasons in a row and there’s a sense that they are going all out to achieve it automatically this time.
They’re already six points clear at the top, but they’ll want to keep the foot on the accelerator and holding onto Shankland is one way to guarantee goals.
For Rangers, there’s no great need for an extra striker at present. With Alfredo Morelos and Jermain Defoe both fit and banging in the goals, the team looks the most potent in attack it has in years.
Come the summer, though, if Morelos is sold, reinforcements will be needed.
