Dundee manager James McPake has hinted at interest in re-signing former Rangers player Graham Dorrans following his surprise return from Australia [Radio Tay News].

The midfielder joined the Dee in the summer of 2019 after his two-year stint at Ibrox had ended, but he triggered a clause in his contract in November 2020 that allowed him to join Western Sydney Wanderers.

Kenny Miller had previously been appointed as assistant manager at the A-League club and he helped Dorrans quickly settle into the role of a senior player there.

However, he announced a shock return to Scotland earlier this month, citing family reasons.

He’s now a free agent but McPake has hinted that he’d be keen to bring Dorrans back to Dundee for their first campaign back in the top-flight.

“He’s someone I’ve been close to for a while,” admitted the Dee manager. “He was my player, he was my teammate and I was on the phone to him most days when he was in Australia as well, through texts or whatever. We got to watch the games and he did well down there.”

“They had a good time but they got back for family reasons. He’s a good guy and he’s a very good footballer. When those types of players pop up then they could add to any team.”

A Dorrans return to Dundee could be something that suits all parties following his relatively brief stint in Australia.

While injuries blighted his time at Rangers, he’s a vastly experienced player who could still do a job at Premiership level.

If the 34-year-old was to re-sign for the Dens Park outfit, he’d be linking up with another former Rangers star, Charlie Adam, who was the standout player in their successful promotion charge last season.

Rangers are scheduled to face the Dee in an away fixture on 25 September and will host them at Ibrox on 4 December.

Meanwhile, an early-season revenge mission for Steven Gerrard has been selected for Sky Sports coverage.
