Early-season revenge mission for Rangers boss Gerrard picked up by Sky Sports

An early-season revenge mission for Rangers boss Steven Gerrard has been picked up by Sky Sports, with the broadcaster set to show the Gers’ trip to St Johnstone in September.

Rangers had little to no problems with the Saints during the first half of last season, beating them 3-0 home and away.

However, Callum Davidson’s side proved to be much sterner opponents following the turn of the year.

A second-half goal from Ianis Hagi was enough to secure three points at Ibrox in February, but Gers were held to a 1-1 draw at McDiarmid Park in the league in April before being knocked out of the Scottish Cup by the Perth outfit at Ibrox just a few days later.

That quarter-final was also 1-1 after 90 minutes and St Johnstone then triumphed on penalties, before going on to win the competition and complete an unlikely domestic cup double.

55 was the main goal last season but that cup exit hurt Gerrard and he’ll be keen to prove that he and his staff have since worked out how to best the Saints.

The first meeting between the two sides next season will be at McDiarmid Park on 11th September and Sky Sports confirmed on Monday that they will be showing the 12.30pm kick-off live.

It’s the fourth early-season Gers fixture to be selected, as their opening day clash with Livingston (31st July), a trip to Dundee United (7th August) and the first Old Firm of the season (29th August) have all already been confirmed for coverage.

Rangers fans will be hoping for further signings before the start of the season and an Ibrox -linked African international is reportedly available for a ‘small amount’.
