Philippe Clement is yet to strengthen Rangers in this transfer window despite knowing that he needs depth throughout his team.
There are plenty of players in the squad that need to be moved on and the manager will be encouraged by interest from Italy in Rabbi Matondo.
Clement has addressed Rangers’ shortage of players at centre-half but will feel aggrieved to miss out on a dependable option well within his budget.
Rangers-linked Dion Sanderson makes bargain move
Dion Sanderson has been linked to Rangers on more than one occasion before the 6ft 2inch tall stopper signed for Birmingham City in the summer of 2023.
Ironically, on-loan Light Blues centre-half Ben Davies is one of the reasons why Sanderson has moved to Blackburn Rovers in the sort of short-term deal that could have come in handy for Clement.
“The two lads have cost the club next to nothing. They’re very good deals that we have been able to get,” John Eustace said of signing Sanderson and Adam Forshaw via the Lancashire Telegraph.
“That will, hopefully, put us in a strong position to focus on the two key positions we want to bring in which is in the forward areas.
“We haven’t got finances like some of the other top six or seven have. We have come here, look at Middlesbrough’s team, full of experience and quality.
“It’s important whoever comes in, they’re the right characters for this final 21 games of the season.”
Two targets named as Rangers duo struggle for fitness
Despite strolling through the pre-season friendly against Rangers last summer, Sanderson has played just 92 minutes in the league for the League One outfit this season.
As a permanent option, Rangers would be better served looking elsewhere, but with John Souttar a long-term doubt and Leon Balogun struggling to stay fit, signing a physical defender who is comfortable on the ball should be a priority.
Bamo Miete was reported as a possible target and Rangers have been named as being interested in Hjalmar Ekdal, who is available for loan from Burnley.
As yet though, nothing concrete has emerged despite this being a problem long before the 1st of January.
