Danny Rohl has gone on record to state that Rangers had to convince a player to sign a new contract amid interest from top clubs.

The German is facing a tricky few weeks as the futures of a number of players will need to be decided.

This will then determine how many new faces will walk through the door in the summer transfer window, with an overhaul on the cards.

Danny Rohl compliments the hierarchy for retaining Ashton Scally’s services

Rohl has revealed that there were a number of big clubs keen on securing Ashton Scally’s services.

Rangers News reported on Manchester City’s interest in the young left-back, who at the time was considering leaving the club.

However, Scally then signed a new contract at Ibrox, which will keep him in Glasgow for the foreseeable future.

The Rangers manager sent praise to the hierarchy for retaining his services despite interest from elsewhere.

He has spoken extremely highly of the 16-year-old and has been pleased with his potential.

The German saw the teenager perform in a friendly game in October, and that was enough for the Gers boss to realise that he should be at the club for the long term.

Rohl said: “Big compliments to the club because we worked really hard to keep Ashton here.

“He had a lot of interest from big clubs. For me, it was important to see him when I arrived in October.

“He played a friendly game with us and I saw his potential.

“We want to bring academy players into the first team. This is also part of my job.

“We want to develop them and give them opportunities here.”

When can Scally make his Rangers debut?

Rohl wanted to hand Scally his senior debut this season in the Scottish Cup, but could not as the defender was only 15 at the time.

However, given what he has been saying about him, it is evident that the German will look to hand him his debut next season.

In the initial rounds of the Scottish League Cup, managers often give the academy prospects a chance, and they could look to do the same with the Scotsman.

Scally will also be part of the first-team training camp in pre-season and travelled with the team to Spain recently, so the plans seem to be in place.
