As Rangers links resurface to a reportedly in-demand centre-back, the situation surrounding one of the club’s leading defenders is fast becoming the elephant in the room.
Ibrox stalwart Connor Goldson is very much the rock that the club’s title success of last season was built on and the defender never missed a minute of football in a legendary campaign.
Now 28, the ex-Brighton centre-half has entered the final year of his Rangers deal and whilst plenty around him have announced new contracts, fans nervously await movement regarding Connor.
The defender has been simply ginormous for Rangers ever since Steven Gerrard came into the club and at one point was even valued at £18m to the side by a leading data analyst [the Athletic].
Rangers broke the clean sheet record last season whilst they also broke the British record for goals conceded in a single season – success which is in no small part down to Connor’s performances.
This is a pivotal moment in the vice-captain’s career – and there can be little doubt Goldson has represented huge value for money at £3.5m in 2018 – with the Premier League offering riches and a better shot at an England call-up.
But fans are nervous regarding the player’s future and what Rangers might do if contract talks stall – do we play the defender and let him run down his deal or do we cash in before it’s too late?
The situation surrounding Goldson is also made more interesting by those links to Dutch U21 defender Danilho Doekhi.
This week, the defender suggested he was open to a move to Ibrox as he discussed his future with Eredivisie side Vitesse Arnhem and quizzed on the Rangers interest.
“I can’t do anything with it now,” he responded when asked about the reported interest from the Light Blues [Daily Record].
“All my business runs through my manager, but if something is serious, I will seriously think about it.”
Rangers currently have six centre-backs on the books at Ibrox so perhaps any Doekhi interest might depend on what happens with Ibrox hero Goldson this summer.
Whatever the case, there will be defensive exits from Ibrox this summer but there won’t be many Gers fans who hope it’s Goldson whos’ shown the exit door.
Reports earlier in the summer claimed that Goldson has signed a new deal at the club but so far there has yet to be any officially announcement as such.
