Inverness Caledonian Thistle manager John Robertson has given an update on Rangers winger Kai Kennedy’s future ahead of the January transfer window [Daily Record].

Kennedy starred at Colts and U20s level for the Gers last season and was rewarded with a first-team debut against Stranraer in January.

He was dropped from the first-team squad during pre-season, though, following an alleged disagreement with Steven Gerrard [Daily Record], and his current contract expires in the summer, ensuring he is free to speak to other clubs next month.

However, it was reported in November that negotiations were underway regarding a new deal [Glasgow Live] and Robertson is hopeful that something will be agreed in the near future, which would, in turn, allow the 18-year-old’s stint in Inverness to be extended.

“We have spoken to Rangers and they have given us the scenario they see going forward,” he said [Daily Record]. “His future with them, first and foremost, is the key thing that has to be discussed between Rangers and the player.”

“Until that is sorted we have to wait and see, as he is a Rangers player. They have told us if he signs a new deal they are quite happy for him to remain here this season.

“Until he does that, it is up for grabs. That hasn’t been done at the moment, so we will just crack on for the next couple of games before contacting Rangers again to find out what the situation is.”

Kennedy is one of the most exciting talents produced by the Rangers Academy for some time, and the diminutive winger wowed supporters earlier this month with a dazzling display for Caley Thistle against Queen of the South.

He’s made nine appearances to date for the Highlands club and although he has struggled to influence proceedings in recent weeks, regular game time in the second tier should be extremely beneficial for his development.

It’s a little strange that the uncertainty regarding his future has dragged on for so long, but plenty of fans will be hoping an agreement is just around the corner, as there’s a big desire to see more homegrown players become first-team stars at Ibrox.

While Kennedy’s loan stint could be extended, another young Rangers winger could be set for a move abroad in January in search of playing time.
