Celtic are “one of a number of clubs” interested in signing Rangers-tipped Nottingham Forest and Scotland defender Scott McKenna.

The Parkhead side are the only of the two Old Firm clubs named in a fresh report which links the 27-year-old former Aberdeen star with a return to Scotland.

Scott McKenna, 27, is currently banished from the Nottingham Forest first-team following an incident with ex-Rangers defender Joe Worrall in December.

Whilst Nottingham Forest Academy graduate Worrall – who is coincidentally the club’s captain – has been recalled to the squad, Scott McKenna is expected to be moved on this month.

Celtic make “tentative” Scott McKenna enquiries

PLZ Soccer are reporting that Celtic have made “tentative enquiries” about Scott McKenna as Brendan Rodgers looks to bolster his squad this January.

The Parkhead side’s issues at centre-back have been well-documented with Liverpool loanee Nat Philips – the son of former Rangers star Jimmy – expected to return to Anfield this month.

Rangers meanwhile have not been officially linked to Scott McKenna but the centre-back’s homegrown status has been noted as a point of potential interest at Ibrox.

Both Rangers and Celtic require a minimum of eight homegrown players in their UEFA squads with the 33-times capped Scotland international certainly one of the best options around.

Rangers transfer interests focused elsewhere?

Whilst at this stage Celtic’s interest is only tentative, many Rangers fans felt Scott McKenna might’ve been a good fit at Ibrox.

A good age with plenty of Premier League experience, the defender’s time at Aberdeen also means he knows the Scottish Premiership and can contribute north of the border.

Rangers have also had their own defensive issues this season – Connor Goldson is not getting any younger and neither is preferred partner Leon Balogun.

Philippe Clement has used Scotland international John Souttar sparingly whilst the much-maligned Ben Davies has struggled to maintain his fitness since moving to the club last summer.

Despite this, much of the transfer chatter this January has been focused elsewhere with a striker, right-winger, midfielder, and left-back at the top of the club’s wishlist.

Rangers have already added Wolves forward Fabio Silva to the club’s ranks, the Portuguese talent turning down the chance to play for Celtic in the process.
