Joe Worrall in Premier League return as homegrown Rangers option hopes take twist

Ex-Rangers star Joe Worrall returned to the Nottingham Forest squad after being banished by Steve Cooper – but there’s still no sight of Scott McKenna.

Worrall, now 26, came off the bench in the 3-1 Premier League win away at Newcastle United, returning to the squad for the first time since the clash with Liverpool at the end of October.

This comes after both Joe Worrall and Scott McKenna were banished from first-team training by outgoing manager Steve Cooper earlier in the month.

Now managed by Portuguese coach Nuno Espírito Santo, the return of captain Worrall comes as a surprise with the club very tight-lipped on the entire situation.

But the continuing absence of Scott McKenna may well also be of interest to Rangers fans, many of whom have tipped the ex-Aberdeen star for a return north of the border.

Old Rangers foe Scott McKenna waits on recall

The Kirriemuir-born centre-back has been at the centre of much transfer discussion, with Scott McKenna out of contract at Nottingham Forest in the summer.

Given the defender’s situation we’d be extremely surprised if the club renew the stopper’s deal which means McKenna may well be a homegrown transfer option in the summer.

A fully-fledged Scotland international who has made 30 caps for the country, at 27-years-old we’d be very surprised if McKenna’s profile isn’t on Philippe Clement’s desk heading into the summer.

Rangers need to bulk out their squad with the best homegrown options around and as far as centre-backs go, we could do much worse than one who’s made 25 Premier League appearances in the last two seasons.

Joe Worrall returns for Nottingham Forest

Premier League centre-back Joe Worrall spent a year at Ibrox back in 2018/19 and his time at Rangers is viewed with some controversy.

A talented centre-back by all accounts, the defender had the tendency to switch off in big moments and it cost Rangers as the club rebuilt under Steven Gerrard.

A young star learning his trade, Rangers is an unforgiving environment at the best of times and the defender has been frank about the abuse he received during his time in Glasgow.

Forming a formidable partnership with Scott McKenna over the years at Nottingham Forest, the fall-out during the ill-fated reign of Steve Cooper remains a mystery.

But it appears it’s Nottingham Forest academy graduate Worrall, and not McKenna, who still has a future at the ambitious Premier League outfit as Nuno takes over.
