Brighton get “confirmed” £35m boost as Rangers sneak in on midfielder

Premier League Brighton are reportedly set to receive £35m from the sale of Alexis MacAllister to Liverpool, as Rangers sneak in on Jose Cifuentes.

According to Fabrizio Romano, the English top flight’s surprise package of the season are set to bank a pretty penny from the sale of the 24-year-old World Cup Winner, who moved to the Amex in 2019 from Argentinos Juniors.

The report claims that Liverpool have accessed a release clause in the midfielder’s contract, with Brighton now having an opening in their squad for a midfielder at a time when they’ve been linked to Jose Cifuentes.

But it appears – if the links were legitimate – that Rangers are set to pip Premier League suitors in the hunt for 24-year-old Ecuadorean international Cifuentes, who is entering the final six months of his deal at current side LAFC.

According to the latest, Jose Cifuentes is set to undergo a medical at Rangers with the Ibrox side closing in on an impressive move for the midfielder.

Should the Ecuadorean get over the line, the midfielder will be the sixth signing of the Michael Beale era and follow the most recent arrival in ex-England international goalkeeper Jack Butland.

Rangers ‘beat Premier League clubs to Brighton-linked Jose Cifuentes’

Brighton were linked to Jose Cifuentes alongside the likes of Leeds United earlier in the year, whilst Newcastle United were linked last summer.

Fabrizio Romano – here seemingly breaking the Alexis MacAllister transfer to Liverpool – has also previously commented on Rangers’ interest in Jose Cifuentes and claims the club have beaten Premier League sides to the midfielder’s signature.

“Jose Cifuentes from LAFC is really close to Rangers, there have been negotiations, very advanced, between Cifuentes and Rangers and the clubs of course,” said Romano.

“The agents of the player met with Rangers two days ago and so Cifuentes could leave MLS to join Rangers.

The Italian journalist would later add: “I think this could be a smart move for Rangers because Premier League clubs also wanted him, but Rangers are offering an interesting project. So, the conversation is going well.”

Jose Cifuentes has just reached the CONCACAF Champions League Final with LAFC, but the seemingly Rangers-bound midfielder was dropped for the second leg.
