Birmingham transfer stance on Ben Davies revealed amid Rangers defensive crisis

Ben Davies seems to be thriving on his loan away from Rangers at Birmingham.

The centre-back found himself surplus to requirements at Ibrox at the start of this season after the signing of Robin Propper permanently and Neraysho Kasanwirjo on loan.

Far from a regular anyway, the 29-year-old was pushed further down the pecking order and was told he could leave the club in search of more game time.

An exit was as he joined the Blues on a loan deal for this season but it does also include an option for Birmingham to buy from Rangers permanently.

Davies wasn’t initially in the Blues team as he provided cover for Christoph Klarer and Krystian Bielik.

But a suspension to Bielik allowed him in and Birmingham fans were blown away, questioning Gers’ assessment of the player.

Davies has continued to get games and has now managed 15 League One appearances, the majority of them being starts.

It comes with Gers staring a defensive crisis in the face with injuries to John Souttar, Leon Balogun, Dujon Sterling and Kasanwirjo already back at Feyenoord.

Philippe Clement was asked about a potential recall for Davies but remained tight-lipped on the possibility.

While Barry Ferguson urged Rangers to sell him to bring in some much-needed cash for signings of their own.

And Birmingham’s own stance on the situation has now been revealed.

What Birmingham want to do with Rangers loanee Ben Davies

As mentioned, the big-spending League One club have an option to sign Davies permanently.

And Birmingham World are now reporting that they “would be delighted” to sign the player beyond his initial loan.

It’s said Blues chiefs are considering taking their option up after being pleased with the 29-year-old having established himself as a starter.

The fact he can also cover at left-back is working in his favour amid injuries to former Hearts man Alex Cochrane, Lee Buchanan and Ethan Laird.

The Blues see Davies as a long-term option who they can continue to rely on should they, as expected, win promotion back to the Championship.

Clement on Rangers’ transfer window

Clement produced a rather ominous quote when asked about Rangers‘ plans for the transfer window recently.

He said: “That’s something that Patrick (Stewart, CEO) will address towards you guys

“He wants to give that explanation what is the plan for January.

“I think every manager feels that (they could use more players), and for sure in the situation we are.

“For the moment with injuries and everything, but there’s also the situation of the club. You need to pay it also, and I’m not the one who can pay that. I don’t have that money.”
