Announcement is made for Oscar Cortes but it’s not Rangers confirming him

Rangers have yet to announce the signing of Oscar Cortes despite every media outlet reporting that it is a done deal.

What we do know though, is the number that Gers boss Philippe Clement’s newest member of his squad will be wearing.

According to Julian Capero of Colombian site Futbol Red, Rangers have already issued Oscar Cortes with his squad number and it is a familiar one.

Rangers to give Oscar Cortes a familiar number

The number ten shirt vacated by Steven Davis is available but it looks as though a former fans’ favourite will be seeing a new face in his shirt.

Andy Halliday’s old number 16, according to Capero, is the one that will be seen when Rangers announce Oscar Cortes at Ibrox as Clement’s third signing of the window.

“Óscar Cortés signed his contract today as a new Rangers player . Confirmed the advance. It will be made official in the next few hours. Will wear shirt 16.”

The big question is, will he be the last?

Jefte now looks like he is more likely to arrive in the summer after Fabrizio Romano broke the news of APOEL refusing to cut short his loan spell from Fluminense.

What they are clinging to is the hope that they will be able to pay the agreed option to buy clause in the summer before selling at a profit to Rangers.

With Ridvan Yilmaz now looking like he is comfortable as first choice left-back, there is no rush to bring someone else in or accept anything below what we value the Turkey international at.

It is at the other end of the park where we could do with a bit more depth though.

No Danilo, Abdallah Sima or Kemar Roofe has left Philippe Clement short of options.

Fabio Silva offers versatility but there will be a nagging doubt that we don’t have enough goals in the forward line even if Rangers new number 16 Oscar Cortes hits the ground running.

The clock is ticking.
