Ally McCoist knows Derek McInnes personally and has delivered a verdict on him signing Lewis Ferguson at Rangers this summer.

The 26-year-old has arguably been Scotland’s best performer at the World Cup, with the Bologna midfielder pulling the strings in the middle of the park.

Rangers are eyeing a move for Ferguson, but have yet to open talks with the midfielder or his club over a potential transfer.

If Lewis Ferguson joins post the World Cup, who should Derek McInnes name the Rangers captain?

Ally McCoist believes Lewis Ferguson is an ‘obvious’ signing for Rangers

McCoist has hammered home just how important the recruitment is for Rangers in the summer transfer window.

In his view, players who have arrived in recent years have not been up to the standard to win the club silverware.

He is delighted by Lawrence Shankland’s signing from Hearts, but believes that he should have signed two years ago.

McCoist wants the Light Blues to regain their Scottish identity and that will begin by signing quality players from the country.

In his opinion, looking at Ferguson’s performances for Scotland, he should be someone whom the Ibrox outfit look to sign.

McCoist told The Sun: “Recruitment is vital; it’s absolutely vital. Derek will know that because, generally speaking, the players that have arrived haven’t been of the standard required to win cups and win leagues.

“Lawrence Shankland is already in the door, but that’s a signing that should have been made a couple of years ago.

“For me, Rangers have lost their Scottish identity and I think that’s something Derek will want to address quickly.

“We’ve got to get back to signing the best available Scottish talent. Lewis Ferguson is another obvious one.”

How much is Ferguson likely to cost this summer?

Rangers News understands that while the Light Blues are not making active moves towards signing him, they are keeping tabs on his situation.

A fee of up to £15m could be enough for Bologna to part ways with their captain and prized asset this summer.

With Nicolas Raskin potentially leaving Rangers, McInnes will want a quality midfielder to replace the Belgium international.

In Ferguson, he would get that, but also get someone who understands the club and the league, and could potentially be the captain as well.
