£12m misfit out of pre-season plans as Rangers look to tie up £27k-a-week deal

Whether or not he ends up at Rangers this summer, one of Philippe Clement’s targets clearly has no future at the club currently paying his wages.

Rangers know all too well that poor squad-management and a stockpiling of talent in similar positions leaves you in a rather difficult situation when a transfer window rolls around.

Going into the summer, the Scottish Premiership runners-up had Tom Lawrence, Sam Lammers, Kemar Roofe, Ianis Hagi and Kieran Dowell all capable of playing in that attacking midfield role.

At least, with Lammers sold and Roofe released, some progress has been made with regards to trimming the fat from a bloated and ill-balanced roster. Cantwell is also likely to have played his final game in that iconic blue shirt after handing in a transfer request.

“What we have seen over the last two or three days tells me that the ball is finally beginning to roll,” former Ibrox skipper Barry Ferguson tells the Daily Record, hoping that some movement in the outgoing department can free up space and funds for further signings.

“Connor Goldson’s transfer has been green lighted, Sam Lammers is on his way back to Holland, Ianis Hagi looks like returning to Fiorentina, James Tavernier could be next. And Clement has revealed that Todd Cantwell wants out too.”

Rangers still in pursuit of Sevilla’s Joan Jordan

Rangers certainly will need all the wriggle room they can get – financially speaking – if they are to tie up an ambitious deal for Joan Jordan.

Fabrizio Romano broke the news a fortnight ago.

Writing on his official X account, Romano explained that Rangers had an initial loan offer rejected by a Sevilla side who had little desire to cover a large portion of Jordan’s eye-watering £70,000-a-week salary.

Two weeks on, nothing seems imminent just yet, with Rangers and Sevilla still negotiating a rather tricky deal.

Reporter Fernando Serrano believes that Philippe Clement’s side are willing to cover around 40 per cent of Jordan’s salary (accounting for £27,000-a-week) though you get the feeling Sevilla would prefer a clean break and a permanent parting of the ways.

Andalusian publication ABC report that Jordan is not part of Sevilla’s pre-season plans. He is one of those in the proverbial ‘bomb squad’ alongside ex-Real Madrid youngster Oscar Rodriguez and the now Las Palmas-bound Adnan Januzaj.

Jordan was also not called up for Sevilla’s 1-0 friendly victory over Al-Ittihad on Friday.

La Liga giants are ready to move Jordan on

At the age of 30, the veteran playmaker is certainly not the typical Clement and Nils Koppen signing.

The Rangers bosses have prioritised youth over experience thus far, with Jefte Vital, Clinton Nsiala, Hamza Igamane and co all under the age of 22 and signings made with the future in mind.

In fact, Clement has indicated that neither Nsiala or Igamane will be starters initially.

But, after losing both John Lundstram and Ryan Jack, Rangers perhaps feel that they would benefit from the arrival of a footballer who knows how to put his foot on the ball and control proceedings from a deep-lying playmaker role.

Jordan, who joined Sevilla from Eibar for £12 million back in 2019, was one of the most influential, most cultured central midfielders in La Liga during his early days at the Europa League specialists.
