Ovie Ejaria is still settling into his Rangers career, but the young English U20 international was superb last night.
Filling in for the on-form Ryan Jack, Ejaria was neat, tidy and showed immense close control in a tough contest.
He regularly made himself an option and spun superbly on the ball at times – even knocking the ball over an opposition player’s head to be felled illegally. He showed classy flashes, even if his end product is not completely polished. More than that, he was willing to dig in and get involved in the press.
His gangly, unorthodox midfield style is often unpredictable, but he has a strange ability to retain the ball when it looks like it’s about to slip away from him.
He almost inspired a goal too when he spun away from two Maribor defenders in the first half with ease before driving into the opposition box.
Unfortunately, nothing came of that chance, but there’s a lot more to come of the young midfielder.
That said it is surprising that he is only 20 years old. Both physically and in terms of ability he feels much older, but often his decision making lets him down. Last night he dug in, kept it simple when he had to and always made himself available.
He more than deserved his standing ovation and Rangers fans can more than look forward to what the youngster can offer them this season.
