With bags of potential in a key position and at such a young age, Rangers should stick by Alfredo Morelos.

We wrote last week of how fan anger was growing amongst the Rangers support and that Morelos’ form meant that Steven Gerrard required another striker.

However, it’s absolutely vital that the Rangers supporters, and more importantly the management team, don’t write off the Colombian just yet.

Last season, Morelos lit up the Rangers’ goal chart with 18 strikes to his name, with loud groans the previous summer about how the club lacked an out-and-out goalscorer. Colombian hitman Morelos filled that void nicely at times, but the issue was that too much of a burden was being placed on him to get the goals.

Umar Sadiq has been brought in to help improve competition for places, but he’s unlikely to take too much of the burden off Morelos given his attributes in the final third. This is why it’s imperative for Rangers to sign another striker to help carry the load from number one choice Morelos.

Against Celtic, the striker missed some memorable chances that seem to have haunted him since. However, he was also capable of bullying Boyata throughout the 3-2 defeat at Ibrox, and has shown a real ability against the Hoops to get into key areas. Whilst the goals failed to come last season, you wouldn’t bet on Morelos passing up those same opportunities again.

It’s not about finding a replacement for Morelos, but simply adding to his goals and giving him some respite. Competition for places is exactly what the club needs throughout the squad, but it’s still lacking up top.

The pressure on the youngster’s shoulders as the sole Rangers goalscorer is a phenomenal one, and it’s important for both the supporters and the management team to stick by Morelos through support and signings.
