Rangers duo excluded as eyebrows raised over PFA Scotland Awards

There are no Rangers players nominated for the Men’s PFA Scotland Player of the Year and Young Player of the Year – resulting in raised eyebrows around the awards.

The Gers have certainly stumbled this season in the Scottish Premiership and thrown away what should’ve been a comfortable league campaign.

But that doesn’t mean there hasn’t been some top performances and the PFA Scotland awards shortlist – which will be voted on by fellow players – has raised a few eyebrows.

Celtic midfielder Tom Rogic is a surprise inclusion on the four-man shortlist, whilst there are arguments for teammate Callum McGregor, Hearts stopper Craig Gordon and Ross County attacker Raegan Charles-Cook.

But the absence of Rangers skipper James Tavernier from the list – the Ibrox right-back scoring 7 goals and laying on 12 assists from right-back this season – is a source of genuine ridicule for the Scottish top-flight.

On the Young Player of the Year award too, the absence of Nigerian international Calvin Bassey must be some kind of joke.

The notion Aberdeen duo Connor Barron and Calvin Ramsey or Hibs star Josh Doig deserve the award over Rangers’ Young Player of the Year, given the fact their clubs finished in the bottom six, is laughable.

It’s hard to argue against the justifiable inclusion of Celtic winger Liel Abada.

Rangers might’ve let the league title slip but for James Tavernier and Calvin Bassey not to be recognised through respective nominations makes a mockery of this entire process.

Rangers pair make PFA Scotland TOTY

Rangers captain Tavernier has however been recognised as part of the PFA Scotland Team of the Year, with Alfredo Morelos also included in the XI.

Ibrox-bound Hearts defender John Souttar was also included in the team.

The only Rangers player who is recognised with a PFA Scotland nomination is Women’s team player Lizzie Arnott, with the Ibrox women closing in on their first ever league title.

Meanwhile, Rangers manager Giovanni van Bronckhorst has quashed a key player rumour ahead of the trip to play RB Leipzig.
