Old age catches up with everyone, even Allan Mcgregor. The current Rangers goalkeeper is 39 and the likelihood is he won’t be playing for the club for too much longer.
The shot-stopper will go down in Rangers’ illustrious history as one of the club’s most revered goalies. Many fans of a younger generation place him in as high esteem as Andy Goram.
This might sound farfetched, especially for supporters of a certain vintage, but his longevity and ability have enabled him to break into the pantheon of Rangers greats.
Since his first appearance against Forfar in a Scottish cup in 2002 aged 20 he has secured legacy status. Albeit with a period away from the club following our administration in 2012.
Since returning in the summer of 2018 he has arguably been one of the side’s most consistent performers. This season has been different, however, with some uncharacteristically poor moments, most obviously that late fumble in the draw with Hearts.
The question is, who will eventually replace the club stalwart? In Jon Mclaughlin, there is a very stable and reliable keeper.
If this were to happen, would Robbie McCrorie be content to sit on the bench and watch on?
The young keeper is at the stage in his career where he needs to be playing regular football. His performance against Celtic was as impressive as it was mature. Could he be the man to take over the jersey?
Failing that, could Gerrard be tempted into the transfer market for a new goalkeeper?
Zander Clark at St Johnstone has been improving steadily over the previous few years and could be an option.
The manager may well have an important decision at the end of the current season. This could be vital for the club’s long-term hopes.
