Top three Rangers transfer wastes of money since Steven Gerrard

Add as preferred source on Google

There have been some questionable signings made by Rangers since Steven Gerrard arrived to rebuild our reputation but who have been the worst value for money?

The former Gers boss brought in a few experienced campaigners on free transfers like Allan McGregor and Scott Arfield both of whom were key members of the squad that won the league and got to the final of the Europa League.

One thing that Rangers need to get better at though is, when money is spent, making sure that there is value for money and this is who hasn’t been since Steven Gerrard’s arrival in 2018.

Rangers might not have given Steven Gerrrard a blank cheque but he was certainly given more funds and a bigger wage bill than any of his recent predecessors.

Players like Connor Goldson, Borna Barisic and Ryan Kent arrived for more money than we had spent since Walter Smith’s second spell in charge and he had more hits than misses when it came to splashing out, something his predecessors can’t claim.

It’s been hard not to put players like Kemar Roofe and Filip Helander on the list because of how little game time they played during their respective four-year contracts.

Their contribution towards winning the league and form in Europe just keeps them out though and, in fairness, when fit, they are quality players worth the transfer fees paid at the time.

Rangers most expensive flops since Steven Gerrard arrived

Sam Lammers

Yes, it’s early doors given he has only played 27 games for Rangers, however, in those games he has shown almost nothing to suggest that his future is in Glasgow.

Screamer against Dundee aside, for £3m, his numbers in the key number ten role are appalling and miles off what we should be getting for that sort of money.

He’s missed more sitters than he has contributed to goals and that tells you everything you need to know.

Even Carlos Pena had his backers.

Ridvan Yilmaz

An exciting signing at the time given his international status but a failure to settle and physical attributes that make him a target in the Scottish Premiership has seen Borna Barisic continue to keep his place under three different managers.

A reported fee of £3.4m that could rise to £5m was agreed 18-months ago but it looks already that Rangers will be trying to recoup this before it’s too late.

The right player but at the wrong club and, for the money paid, we just haven’t got anywhere near value for money.

Ben Davies

Linked under Steven Gerrard, now fourth choice centre-half under Philippe Clement, the Gers boss will be hoping that someone will be willing to cough up as much of the £4m that Rangers paid to Liverpool last year when the transfer window opens in January.

Barely played in the first-half of last season and has made too many high profile errors for many fans’ liking.

Not as bad a player as made out but also nowhere near the quality required for the money paid.

There are other players that Steven Gerrard signed for Rangers, like Eros Grezda, even Cedric Itten, that could have made this list but Cyriel Dessers’ recent form has given a glimmer of hope that he could yet contribute even if his fee was one that could easily have seen his name added too.

Philippe Clement has a tough job on his hand but he has to get more Rangers transfers right than wrong when the window opens.
