Rangers News have picked out three young Rangers players to watch in 2022.
The club has invested a lot of money into its Academy setup in recent seasons and there’s currently a lot of talent all the way down through the age-group levels.
Therefore, it was tough to narrow it down to three but we’ve done it, before also handing out some honourable mentions.
Alex Lowry
Lowry is probably the most gifted player in the club’s youth setup right now.
The 18-year-old attacking midfielder’s season has been disrupted by injury but he built up an extended streak of B team games in the run-up to Christmas and looked a class apart at times.
He has quick feet, vision, awareness and swagger and is brilliant from dead-ball situations.
He’s still learning how to operate out of possession and he has some filling out to do, but he’s a real star in the making and it wouldn’t be a huge surprise if he was handed a first-team debut in the Scottish Cup fourth-round clash against Stirling Albion after the winter break.
Tony Weston
Weston is an obvious choice due to the sheer volume of goals he’s scored so far this season.
He’s kept the much-talked-about Juan Alegria out of the B team starting XI at times and for good reason.
The 18-year-old scouser has already bagged 20 goals in the Lowland League and he scored a hat-trick against Septemvri Sofia in the UEFA Youth League.
His lack of height and physicality is a concern in terms of how he’ll make the transition to first-team football, but his clever movement allows him to occupy pockets of space and link up with other attackers, while he’s also got the pace to hurt teams in behind.
Rory Wilson
Only turning 16 in early January, Wilson is the youngest of the three, but who knows what level he’ll be at by the end of 2022.
So far this season, the striker has scored prolifically for the Gers U18s, starred for Scotland U17s and featured for the B team.
His selection in UEFA Youth League squads aged 15 shows just how highly he’s rated by the Academy coaches.
When it’s time for him to sign a professional deal, there’s bound to be significant interest from elsewhere, but it’s crucial that the club hold onto him as his natural goalscoring ability is very difficult to find.
Honourable mentions go to centre-back Leon King, right-back Adam Devine, midfielders Charlie McCann and Charlie Lindsay and forward Ross McCausland.
