Rangers coach drops verdict on Juan Alegria amid fan first-team calls

Rangers B head coach David McCallum has given his thoughts on Juan Alegria to Rangers News amid calls from many supporters for him to be promoted to the first team.

After months of speculation, the Gers signed 19-year-old Alegria from FC Honka in August.

He started with a bang with a brace on his B-team debut before missing several weeks of action through injury.

After recovering, the Colombian starlet was spotted in first-team training earlier this month and has since scored in B-team fixtures against Caledonian Braves and Alloa Athletic, bagging a hat-trick in the latter.

He drew a blank in a 1-0 win over Berwick Rangers in the Lowland League at the weekend, though, missing a big chance shortly before being substituted on the hour mark.

So, is he ready to make a permanent jump to the first team squad?

Not yet, says McCallum.

“Juan has just arrived – he’s learning how we play, he’s learning what we want from him as an individual within the team structure,” he told Rangers News after Saturday’s win.

“Obviously, he’s scored a few goals here and there and people become interested to look at that. I think, first of all, Juan needs time to settle.

“Juan needs time to try and make sure he’s fully up to speed with what the team and group want to look like. From an individual point of view, yes he’s scoring goals, but there are other areas we’re looking at to try and make sure he’s a bit more refined.

“That’s in terms of linking play etc and what it all looks like out of possession, so he understands that when hopefully he does get to the first team.

“I think any player that scores goals does bring an interest but he just needs time to understand what it looks like to play for Rangers.”

McCallum also revealed why several key men didn’t make the squad for the Berwick Rangers match. Two are carrying injuries but another has been training with the first team.
