Blackburn Rovers chief Rudy Gestede has admitted uncertainty over the future of former Rangers attacking midfielder Todd Cantwell.

Cantwell left Ibrox in 2024 for Blackburn after spending a year-and-a-half in Glasgow.

Still only 27, it seems like the former Norwich City star could once again be on the move in the summer transfer window.

Todd Cantwell not accepting wages offered by Blackburn Rovers

Gestede, who is the Head of Football Operations at Ewood Park, has admitted the harsh reality of modern-day football.

He has admitted that the club have offered Cantwell the highest wages possible based on what their wage structure is.

However, the Englishman is not accepting it, and that has left the Lancashire outfit in a Catch-22 situation.

Gestede told the Fans’ Forum: “We have offered Todd Cantwell and Balazs Toth the highest wages we can in terms of our wage structure, but they are not interested. We simply cannot compete.”

Cantwell signed a three-year deal at Ewood Park in 2024, so he still has another year left to run on his contract.

However, with an agreement not being reached over improved wages, he could be on the move this summer.

Why a reunion would benefit both Rangers and Cantwell

Rangers have struggled for creativity from the number 10 position since Cantwell’s departure, and would certainly be willing to take a punt on him again.

He could prove to be useful against deep-sitting defences as he has the ability to play the killer pass as well as make darting runs into the box.

Cantwell is one for the big occasions, scoring in the Old Firm derby, and he has proven to have the nerves it takes to rile up opponents and get under their skins to give his team an advantage.

For him, he has struggled to adapt to life at Ewood Park and would be welcomed with open arms at Rangers.

He would be a regular starter and could help the side potentially win the league next season as the squad now is in much better shape than it was when he left.
