Rangers have been presented with an absolutely golden opportunity to secure an elite, top-tier replacement for James Tavernier this summer.

The former captain’s exit has left a massive, glaring hole at right-back that Andrew Cavenagh and Co. must fill with genuine pedigree.

While several names have been floated, including Westerlo’s Bryan Reynolds, an unexpected and highly decorated solution has just emerged on the European market.

According to Dutch outlet Voetbal International, veteran defender Joel Veltman looks set to leave Brighton & Hove Albion this summer.

The 34-year-old looks destined to depart the Amex Stadium as a free agent after six highly successful seasons in England.

A four-man shortlist has been drawn up to replace James Tavernier…

Rangers must rival European suitors for Joel Veltman

According to VI, Brighton made a serious contract offer to retain the Dutchman, but negotiations have officially stalled after he rejected their terms.

The versatile defender has racked up 191 matches for the Seagulls but is now hungry for one final sporting challenge before he hangs up his boots.

While clubs from Germany and Spain have already made enquiries, Rangers must urgently enter the race to secure his signature.

The Ibrox recruitment team need to act swiftly before continental clubs snap up the available free agent.

Veltman’s immense wealth of experience at the absolute highest level of the game makes him a flawless target for the Light Blues.

The defender won three Eredivisie titles with Ajax and has 28 caps for the Netherlands.

His proven track record in the most demanding league in the world ensures he would adapt instantly to the pressures of Ibrox.

Which right-back would you prefer at Rangers?

There is a chance that two new right-backs may be signed…

Veltman would be great for Derek McInnes

While Veltman might not replicate Tavernier’s historic numbers going forward, he offers a far superior level of defensive discipline.

The Dutchman is naturally an incredibly robust right-back, but he is equally comfortable stepping inside to play as a central defender.

That elite tactical flexibility would give incoming manager Derek McInnes immense structural variation when drawing up his matchday blueprints.

Bringing a proven Premier League leader to Glasgow on a free transfer is the exact type of ambitious move Rangers need to make.
