Dapo Mebude’s future at Rangers still remains unclear after last week.

A report had the youngster as having rejected a new deal at Ibrox. Despite the close attention he’s been getting from Steven Gerrard, Mebude apparently wasn’t convinced enough to sign up in Glasgow.

There was still no official word on this, with only one source reporting the news. Rangers, however, would be unlikely to provide any official word unless it was good news.

Therefore, it could very well still be the case that Mebude has indeed turned down fresh terms at Ibrox. Questions can now be asked about what else Rangers can do to get him signed up for the long-term.

WAYNE ROONEY TO EVERTON IS A JOKE.

But could Gerrard make him change his mind this afternoon with an appearance in the match-day squad? Or better yet, perhaps even make an appearance against Dundee at Dens Park?

Mebude has yet to feature in a single match-day squad for the Gers this season. Despite being called up to first-team training on several occasions now, he’s yet to receive the big call from the manager.

Making big strides

The Scottish Under-19 international is also the brightest young prospect currently in the Hummel Training Centre these days. Whilst the likes of Andrew Dallas, Stephen Kelly, and Serge Atakayi continue to impress everyone with their reserve displays, Mebude has been the one Gerrard has been concentrating on the most this season.

He has also been a huge part of the Scotland Under-19 side that managed to qualify for the Euro 2019 qualification Elite Round. He’s now become a bit of a constant at that level, and has developed extremely well for the Gers over the course of this season alone.

If news of the contract rejection is true, there are still ways Rangers could sway him to sign up. The only obstacle that could go against the club is if he has his eyes on the English Premier League. Many youth stars in Scotland have been swayed by the bright lights of England in the past, only for it to fall flat in their faces. Mebude has to make sure he doesn’t fall into that same trap.

Rangers won’t be bullied by their youngster also. They’ll know just how much they’re willing to do to persuade Mebude. Testing the waters with a top-team appearance, however, would be worth doing.

With Alfredo Morelos suspended, Gerrard has already claimed the club only have one recognised striker available in Kyle Lafferty. Mebude, therefore, could easily slot in as reserve.

For now, however, we wait and see what Gerrard decides to do this afternoon.
