Will Rangers switch to 4-4-2 permanently after big Kilmarnock call?

Steven Gerrard made the change many Rangers fans were hoping for last night.
After all, his January transfer business almost demanded it.
He narrowed the set-up and put two up top.

The 30-year-old has been a consistent performer this season, and was even given the captain’s armband in the friendly against HJK Helsinki.
However, while the manager may feel this XI is his best, they hardly thrived in the Portuguese’s absence.

Was this a one off or a permanent switch?

Last night’s selection hints at a permanent shake-up.
The arrival of Jermain Defoe means there are now two top class strikers at the club.

To maximise the resources at his disposal, Gerrard clearly felt he had to find a way to play both.
Perhaps, though, he should have exercised caution away from home.
Kilmarnock are up there challenging, but that didn’t seem to be a factor in the tactical thinking.
Rangers had received so much praise for their outstanding Old Firm display, but the previous set-up was disregarded.

That being said, they did start well. The formation can hardly be blamed for Worrall’s game-changing error.

In the second half, the chances dried up, though.
With only the full-backs providing width, the majority of crosses came from too deep and after Jones’ goal, the Gers never really looked like scoring.
It was a big call from Gerrard to shake things up and one he won’t have taken lightly.
Despite the result, then, it’s likely he will may persist with the new shape against Livingston, on Sunday.
