Rangers were linked with a move for Croatian international Lovro Majer at the start of the transfer window but a £17m transfer may just have killed any of the Gers’ signing hopes.

However small they may well have been.

After Dani Olmo moved from Majer’s club Dinamo Zagreb to RB Leipzig for £17m earlier reports suggest Majer will be kept back as the playmaker’s replacement despite claims of interest from Rangers.

Rangers were linked to Majer through Croatian football journalist Richard Wilson who claimed the Ibrox side “were already in” [Wilson] for the player.

Quoting Zagreb’s asking price of upwards of £6m, Wilson also suggested that Dinamo may look to increase his value should Dani Olmo depart.

Spanish playmaker Olmo has obviously now moved to Germany.

Balkans journalist Filip Mishov also noted Rangers’ interest in the player but he too conceded that Majer’s immediate future could also depend on Olmo being transferred in this window.

Now it appears 21-year-old Croatian international Majer will get the opportunity to show what he can do with Dinamo in the second half of the season.

Rangers’ may well have one eye on the player but should he flourish with more game time there could well be more suitors come the summer. And an increased asking price.

Rangers have an increased presence in the Balkans, signing Niko Katic, Borna Barisic and Eros Grezda from the Croatian First League last season.

Club scouts were also in attendance during the Croatian Super Cup Final [Daily Record] at the start of the season.
