Which Rangers stars “didn’t take that opportunity” v Stranraer?

Rangers boss Steven Gerrard wasn’t exactly enthused by his side’s performance in the 2-0 win over Stranraer at the weekend.

The Ibrox side might’ve made it through to the next round of the Scottish Cup but the performance against the League One strugglers left a lot to be desired.

After the match Steven Gerrard bemoaned those fringe players who “didn’t take that opportunity” against the Blues, but who was he talking about exactly?

Jordan Jones

The Ibrox winger risked the ire of the Rangers fans with a lacklustre display against Stranraer but there are a few variables to what was ultimately a very poor performance.

Jones hasn’t been seen in a Rangers shirt since September after injuring himself against Celtic but will have did little to convince Steven Gerrard he deserves a place in the team on his return.

Needs to focus on impressing on the field and is in danger of wasting his first season at Ibrox through his own daft behaviour. Hooked on 64 minutes.

Brandon Barker

After Jones stumbled through the match with Stranraer and failed to show enough quality against, let’s be honest here, pretty poor opposition, on came Brandon Barker.

A strange signing in the summer the pacey winger has flattered to deceive at times and is another who is beginning to get on the wrong side of Rangers fans.

You don’t get much time to get firing at Ibrox and Barker has been given plenty of opportunities. Continues to look like a relatively strange signing.

Andy Halliday

Sometimes being a local boy just isn’t enough and there will be a time when the midfielder-turned-left-back’s quality becomes an issue for Rangers.

Given the chance in that increasingly familiar left-back role, Halliday was wasteful with the ball and didn’t provide enough of an outlet down that side.

The fact his Rangers teammates resorted to using the impressive Nathan Patterson is a worry for Halliday and it looks increasingly unlikely his contract won’t be renewed.
