As Rangers battled to find their feet domestically and keep competing in the Europa League, one young breakthrough star was grabbing the headlines.
Glenn Middleton might have only been 18 at the time, but he was relishing his opportunity in a blue shirt. Direct, powerful and with a mean cross, the youngster had everyone excited. And for the most part, still does.
But after making 25 appearances in the first half of the season, he’s only made two since January. What’s happened to this young talent named amongst some of Europe’s elite earlier in the season?

Towards the end of 2018, the youngster showed signs of slowing. More than that, he showed signs of lacking confidence. It’s important not to disrupt his development as a player and person.
Important to “protect” young players
When he was first thrust into the limelight, the young winger was on excellent form. He was direct, could go past players and didn’t look afraid to take the game to the opposition. Middleton was also an unknown force to opposition players.

It’s a common trait with young players to be inconsistent, especially for those out wide. It’s something Gerrard understands. The Gaffer spoke about needing to “protect him as well because he’s still very young.”

Now 19, Middleton will be a crossroads next season. At the moment, he could find it difficult to breakthrough to the squad consistently. Rangers will also be on the hunt for better quality out wide for next year.
Does he stay at Rangers looking to force his way into the side or will he be better served out on loan?
