Rangers have offered a deal to right back turned right midfielder Matt Polster, according to various reports. According to The Scottish Sun, Gerrard himself told the paper that we wanted the American international. He also sees Polster as more than a squad player.
Any signing of Polster would add international strength in depth to the side. But what does it mean for some of the back-up or utility players currently at the club?
It is very unlikely Polster will depose Rangers’ captain fantastic James Tavernier. Which means he’ll battle Jon Flanagan for a back-up spot on that right-hand side.

Flanno hasn’t exactly been at his best all season. Although he has had some solid, important performances for the Gers. Signing Polster adds more strength in depth at the club and it’ll be interesting to see how Gerrard uses him in his squad.
Jon Flanagan has been Rangers defensive utlity man this year
Jon Flanagan has been predominantly used as a back-up left back in this Rangers side. Can Polster be used here too? You simply cannot see James Tavernier making way.
England cap Flanagan also has 18 months left on his contract and you imagine he doesn’t want to play third fiddle at Ibrox. Rangers signed the sturdy right back on a free contract after his deal expired at Liverpool in the Summer.

He has made 22 appearances for Rangers this season, serving as an important squad player. He has endeared himself to fans with his combative style if not his performances at times.
Matt Polster would join the club after spending the last fortnight on trial, including travelling with Rangers to the club’s training camp in Tenerife.
He would add further strength in depth to this Rangers side. But could he have Jon Flanagan considering his position at Rangers?
