What Rangers win over Nice means for the Europa League standings and knockout hopes

Rangers produced a stunning performance to see off a shell-shocked Nice on their own turf with a result nobody either predicted or expected.

The Ligue 1 outfit weren’t at full strength, however, Philippe Clement could also point to his job as manager being made more difficult due to the absence from his squad of Danilo, Ianis Hagi, Oscar Cortes, Rabbi Matondo and Tom Lawrence.

With another three points secured, Rangers win over Nice now leaves them in a great position to progress to the knockout stages of the Europa League, but how close are they?

How Rangers win over Nice affects the Europa League standings

Currently sitting in 8th place on 10 points, Rangers are in the automatic positions to make it straight to the last 16, however, with Spurs and Man Utd still to come in a difficult Europa League fixture list, it is unlikely that they will stay this high up the rankings.

Even with three rounds of games left to be played, it is almost impossible for Rangers to drop out of the top 24, especially with 24th placed Union Saint Gilloise still to come to Ibrox

Spurs are currently 9th and Man Utd 12th on 10 and nine points respectively.

How much money have Rangers made in the Europa League?

With £375,000 for a win and £175,000 for a draw, Rangers win over Nice has landed a decent finance boost with £1.3m from prize money from results alone added to the £3.6m for qualifying for the league phase.

It might not make a huge difference, but £4.9m is enough to cover the transfer fee of what should be a guaranteed starter.

With two games at Ibrox – one of them very winnable – Rangers will be hoping to push through the £5m barrier.

An additional £250,000 is awarded for making the play-off rounds if a place between 9th and 24th is secured with a top eight spot landing £1.5m.

Points mean prizes and the sort of money that can make a difference when shopping on a tight budget.
