Rangers Women’s team are still in with a shout of picking up the Park’s Motor Group SWPL title after a dramatic victory over Glasgow City.

A disappointing draw against Celtic looked to have all but ended Malky Thompson’s side’s chances of success but they are back in the race now.

The draw in the fiery Old Firm saw coach Craig McPherson suspended for attempting to headbutt opposition manager Fran Alonso after a 97th minute equaliser cost Rangers all three points, an incident that also saw headlines go global.

The 2-1 win against title rivals Glasgow City means that there are now just three points between the top three teams and everything is to play for.

Kirtsy Howat fires Rangers Women back into title race

Rachel McLauchlan fired the Gers infront after 23 minutes and it looked as though this was going to be the winning goal until Scotland international Jenna Clark pulled one back for the hosts with three minutes remaining.

As against Celtic, there was late drama when the prolific Kirsty Howat latched onto a perfectly weighted Kirsty MacLean through ball to make it “game on” at the top of the table.

If the Scottish Premiership is a two-horse race, the SWPL has, at least, an extra competitor with Glasgow City the historically dominant side.

Rangers Women won their first league title last season and have only lost once this year, scoring 99 goals and conceding just seven in 26 games, however, five draws sees them currently sitting in third place.

With a home fixture against last night’s opponents and an away tie with Celtic still to play, we could well be seeing a repeat of Helicopter Sunday.

Rangers v Glasgow City on the last day of the season could, potentially, be winner-takes-all.

Women’s football might not be for everyone, but even the most ardent of naysayers would struggle not to get excited about what could be a famous comeback and title defence.
