Rangers boss Giovanni van Bronckhorst has questioned the decision to let RB Leipzig’s eventual first leg winner stand due to an offside player impeding the goalkeeper.
Ex-Man City full-back Angelino rifled in a stunning late volley from the second phase of a corner that whizzed past Allan McGregor and into the bottom corner of his net.
The goal was the only strike of the game as a resilient Rangers resolve was eventually broken with only five minutes or so to play.
But replays appeared to show that Allan McGregor was unsighted by offside RB Leipzig players as the Spanish left-back fizzed in the effort.
It’s something raised by Rangers boss Giovanni van Bronckhorst as he criticised VAR for not picking up the RB Leipzig offside players during the match.
Offside RB Leipzig stars left Rangers keeper “unsighted”
“After the game, we saw some images that Allan (McGregor) appeared to be unsighted for the goal, it was a great strike,” said van Bronckhorst [Rangers].
“Angelino hit the ball almost perfectly but you want your goalkeeper to have a chance. I think they checked it with VAR and watched the positions of those players.
“But it’s a discussion after the game when the goal has counted.
“We know our crowd will give us a lot of energy and we will be prepared for the return leg.
“We still have a shot at a European final, this shows the excellent performances of our players in Europe. We have a shot next week to give it our all and our aim is to reach the final.”
Whatever the case, Rangers still have an opportunity to progress to the Final in Seville but will need to overturn the single goal deficit at Ibrox.
The legendary stadium has proven an almighty asset throughout this competition and Rangers will hope to harness its power as they welcome RB Leipzig to Glasgow.
