"Uncanny" - Rangers fans react to player comparison with club legend

Rangers fans have been hailing Ibrox youth defender Lewis Mayo for joking about visual comparisons to club legend Sasa Papac on Twitter.

The lanky defender is much taller than the former Bosnia international but it hasn’t stopped fans joking about Mayo’s likeness to the iconic full-back.

Mayo, 20, embraced these comparisons and showed how big his affinity is with the club by sending a message saying “no Papac no party”.

Former Rangers left-back Sasa Papac remains a much-loved figure amongst the Ibrox support and naturally, the club’s fans reacted positively to Mayo’s tweet.

Mayo came through the youth ranks at Ibrox and obviously witnessed Papac’s time at Rangers between 2006 and 2012.

One of the club’s most popular players of recent times, there is a definite resemblance between Papac and up-and-coming defender Mayo.

Whilst many fans might not have recognised it before the defender left the tweet, they certainly do now.

Mayo himself might find more opportunities in the Rangers squad this season after fellow centre-half Niko Katic suffered a cruciate inury.

Katic – who was actually born in Papac’s home country of Bosnia – will be out for the foreseeable future with the Rangers fans lending their support to the big defender.

But this could well hand an opportunity to Mayo, who spent a period at Partick Thistle before the domestic league shutdown.

The young bluenose certainly won the fans over on Twitter with his latest tweet and there will be hopes he can do so on the pitch if called upon this season.
