Transfer supremo hands in notice after leaving Rangers with squad that was in a mess

Nils Koppen arrived at Rangers in the midst of a change of approach by the club in terms of recruitment and scouting.

As department head, the Belgian has overseen a series of additional changes including scouts leaving and a more data driven approach being adopted before earning a promotion to become the Light Blues’ technical director.

What this means, is that there is no place for a predecessor who looks set to leave his second club after Rangers and playing a key role in bringing the Scottish Premiership trophy back to Ibrox.

Former Ranger chief scout John Park quits Blackburn Rovers

John Park is a well know member of the scouting fraternity and after a spell at Birmingham City, has handed in his notice at Blackburn Rovers too as the Lancashire club continue to be riddled with in-fighting, according to Alan Nixon writing on his Patreon account.

To highlight the change in what Rangers are doing in terms of scouting and recruitment, a quick look at the difference between Park’s role before he left Rangers in 2023 and what Koppen does now explains it all.

Park was responsible for a network of scouts who would identify or report on talent recommended to Rangers.

Koppen, on the other hand, uses data first to create a pool of potential targets before narrowing the list down.

A subtle yet fundamental difference, but perhaps the reason why Park is looking for another job having had two since leaving Rangers less than a year ago – times change.

It’s also fair to say that Park left Rangers in something of a mess last winter with a squad that was unbalanced and with players who shouldn’t have made it past the first stage of recruitment.

What part does Koppen play in player recruitment now?

Koppen isn’t just a numbers guy though and his previous role as a scout at PSV Eindhoven sees him still carry out assessments the old fashioned way too.

In a lengthy interview, the Gers director touched on near miss signings as well as his day-to-day role.

“At the moment, I’m still quite involved in the process of identifying players,” he adds.

“I’m still travelling out to watch games and for the moment, that’s something I want to do. I think a lot of sporting directors get distracted from the biggest part of the job – transfers. If you’re not able to keep up on the developments on the pitch, and you have to make a decision on a player, for me you enter a tricky zone.”

The Koppen player trading model is one that will take time to be fully implemented, but the changes had to be made.

One league title win since returning to the Premiership in 2016 is all the evidence that is needed.
