‘Touch and go’ Rangers takeover revelation as Dave King steps in to save club for a second time

There was never a dull day when Dave King was around Rangers on a more regular basis, with the club’s biggest shareholder never one to hold his opinion.

Since handing over the reins to Douglas Park, he has been critical of his successor and the board on a number of occasions.

Not kicking on after winning the Scottish Premiership title remains a sore point and King sought extra and external investment after realising that the current incumbents couldn’t take Rangers any further.

Bringing the San Francisco 49ers to the table, King could well be about to save the club he supports for a second time with an imminent timeline for a much-needed takeover.

Dave King gives Rangers takeover timeline and 49ers explainer

King, speaking to Talksport, has revealed exactly how far down the line the deal is and when the new owners could have their feet under the desk:

“These discussions have been going on for some time,” he told talkSport.

“About six months ago was the first time I chatted to Andrew [Cavenagh] to see if there was a basis for getting a deal done that would work for both parties.

“Along the way, as with any negotiations like these, there were times when it was touch and go. But if you ask me where we are in terms of legals being signed and terms and conditions precedent that still have to be fulfilled, I would put it at about 90 per cent right now.”

Has Dave King just saved Rangers again?

There doesn’t seem to be any negativity coming out from either side of the takeover talks.

Paraag Marathe has spoken about Rangers’ partnership with Leeds Utd rather than any sort of multi-club set-up with one as a feeder club.

The Leeds chairman has also shown how highly he sets the bar after gaining promotion to the Premier League.

That Gretar Steinsson, the 49ers Enterprises technical director, has also been helping find a new Rangers manager, would suggest that it is merely a formality before an announcement is made.

King was the right person at the right time in 2015, 10 years later, he is still the right person, but by bringing in the right people to takeover the club and lead Rangers to the next level.
